CHAPTER 35

Phoenix AZ to Las Vegas NV

The sky exploded with color as Big Mike burst out of the clouds into clear air and unlimited visibility. Directly ahead, a huge rainbow ring appeared with Big Mike’s nose pointed directly at the center, like a well-placed arrow toward a bull’s eye.

David wanted to say something, but could not speak as the surreal intensity of crystal-clear blue sky, cream-brown desert floor, and the explosion of light and color, blasted into sight. In the split second, it took for them to slip free of the clouds, they were transported from the gray world of visual sensory deprivation, into a world flooded with colors and natural beauty. Into the visual richness of God’s sun-drenched creation.

After adjusting his eyes to the bright new surroundings, David forced himself to look away from the amazing rainbow ring and out the side window. There below, lay the huge gash of the Grand Canyon, winding across the Earth, ten thousand feet below.

They had flown this route many times before, and each time the natural colors of the canyon, although impressive, had shown subdued and earth-toned in comparison. The normally muted colors were intensified into rich reds, yellows, creams, and browns, as the morning sun burned against the south-facing canyon walls and reflected back to them. Following the canyon forward, David’s eyes returned to the rainbow ring still hanging in the air dead ahead. “My God, more color and we’re flying straight toward it.”

Tom answered. “This is amazing.”

The rich, illuminated colors of the Grand Canyon morning, and the prismatic purity of the rainbow ring, set against the crisp, blue sky, turned David’s thoughts to praise.

“Thank You, God, for being with us. Thank You for the beauty of Your creation. Thank You for answering prayers, and thank You for my life with You.”

David felt a childlike energy fill him, as he experienced the wonder and intimacy of celebrating God’s. Yet, at the same time, deep in his spirit, he was confident and mature, knowing that this was the direct result of prayer and faith. The results of “being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we do not see.”

David was grateful that Tom was flying, because he was lost in the spiritual thrill of God’s love, awestruck by the beauty, and reflecting on the prayer of faith. Faith brought victory over ice, calmed the turbulence, gave safety from danger, and courage to Tom.

The sound of a radio call from air traffic control snapped David back to Earth. “Five Three Seven Eight Mike – Las Vegas Approach – descend to eight thousand feet – altimeter two niner eight – report Stratosphere in sight.”

The Stratosphere Casino Hotel Tower is a visual marker for pilots approaching Runways One Nine Left and Right. Its location and height make it the perfect landmark for entering the traffic pattern.

Tom responded. “Las Vegas Approach – Five Three Seven Eight Mike – down to eight – no contact.”

David looked toward Tom, and said, “I never hear you say “no joy.
